Institutional Collaboration and Synergy
In 1996, PCIC leaders at Our Lady Queen of All Saints Catholic Church organized with area public schools and Pima County for a recreation center, resulting in the $5-million Kino Veterans Memorial Center.
In 1997, PCIC leaders at Santa Cruz Catholic Church held a crime summit, collaborating with the City of South Tucson, neighborhood associations, and local service agencies. Together, they enacted neighborhood strategies that contributed to a 30% reduction in crime in South Tucson.
In 2005, PCIC participated in a community-wide coalition to pass the Regional Transportation Authority, which reflected PCIC leaders’ insistence on improved bus service and sidewalks.
In 2007, PCIC hosted a Tucson Community Summit, “Inequality and Opportunity in the New Economy,” with over 150 participants representing over 75 social service agencies, businesses, religious institutions, and government agencies. The group committed to work together to develop a stronger lobby for Southern Arizona, at the state and federal level, around issues critical to families and youth.
