PCIC's ISSUES AGENDA

Rather than endorse partisan political candidates, the PCIC Issues Agenda is our candidate. It is what we support and lobby for on behalf of Tucson's families. The issues addressed by PCIC are identified by hundreds, sometimes thousands of face-to-face conversations throughout the Metropolitan Tucson area. Our Issues Agenda is developed through house meetings and listening sessions conducted within our member institutions and in the greater community at large. The feedback received through listening is used to prioritize the issues based on importance to families. These issues were subsequently summarized, discussed in PCIC’s public summits and assemblies, and then presented to elected officials to be addressed.

The issues can be large or small, but must meet the following criteria:
They must make a difference in people’s lives.
They must be specific and measurable.
They must be winnable.
They must help build our organization and move us forward.

Issue statements are being updated, but the issue topics PCIC is currently addressing include:

  • Education

  • Health Care
PCIC has long fought to expand access to affordable healthcare for individuals and families. By working with state legislators and the office of the Governor,  Medicaid expansion was passed and roughly 300,000 low-income Arizonans became eligible for health insurance.
  • Poverty

  • Workforce Development
To promote the dignity of work and the economic development in Tucson, PCIC works in tandem with JobPath to provide access to high-skill training opportunities for struggling Tucsonans.  Achievements serve to not only help workers earn a wage sufficient to support a family, but also to better serve the labor needs of businesses and to make public institutions more effective.
  • Immigrant Integration
PCIC actively works at both local and state levels so that immigrant families can participate more fully in public life. In addition to responding to humanitarian crises like the unaccompanied children at the border, local affiliates bring native-born and foreign-born constituents into conversation around the theology and economics of immigration, to educate recent newcomers with financial and know-your-rights tool-kits and to support policies which protect families while defeating those which would unfairly penalize undocumented immigrants for their status.  PCIC helped to secure in-state tuition for DACA students at Pima Community College. All immigration initiatives are rooted in the faith and democratic teachings of member institutions and seek to connect leaders across race, ethnic and language lines.
