Or because you look Latino?
Or because you were wearing a hoodie?
Well, many of the 40+ folks that gathered today for interfaith house meetings told stories of just such stops and harassment. Meeting co-chairs Rev. Elwood McDowell, Pastor of Trinity MBC and Rev. Delle McCormick, Pastor of Rincon Congregational UCC, lead the discussion.
The session was sponsored by the Tucson Clergy Against Racial Profiling (TCARP) group and PCIC and attended by clergy and leaders from Rincon UCC, Trinity MBC, St. Cyril’s Catholic, The Good Shepherd UCC, St.Philip’s Episcopal, Rising Star MBC, PCC Adult Education, Congregation Or Chadash, Iglesia Principe de Paz, and Most Holy Trinity Catholic.
Next steps included suggestions to invite police to attend, research actions with public officials, and expanding the house meetings to other faith and non-faith locations and to include more youth. A planning team will meet on March 12th at 9am at St. Cyril’s to move the suggestions forward.
